| Helping
Hands of Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury is a voluntary organisation made up of members of the
parish and was established in 2002. Its patron is Bishop Michael
of East Anglia. Its objective is to
offer help with small tasks to those in need, usually on a short
term basis.
In providing this help, volunteers are guided
by the principle that the religious liberty and the intrinsic
value of everyone will be respected and that everyone in genuine
need may apply for help. No volunteer will attempt to
proselytise. Volunteers will do all they can to encourage those
they visit to achieve self sufficiency. Strict confidentiality
will be maintained in order to build relationships based on
trust and friendship. All volunteers will have had the enhanced
police check and will have participated in any other training
required by the Diocesan Child Protection Commission.
The sort of tasks that have been done include,
• shopping
• visiting those in hospital or residential care
• taking care of pets, plants etc of those away from home
• lifts to hospital for those with out-patient appointments
• taking elderly people to visit those in care
• home visits after hospitalisation
• lifts to church, day centres, surgery etc.
• light household tasks, e.g. gardening, repair jobs
• visits to the housebound or bereaved
